  109. Oldest license found - 5YM - dated 6/4/20, but there is anecdotal 
  110. evidence that we may have been licensed in 1914. The station was 
  111. active in the early '20s prior to the opening of KFMQ, the U of A's 
  112. first broadcast station. Logs have been found for the '32-'34 period 
  113. when the station (*W*5YM) was active on 'phone using a Class B 
  114. modulation amplifier built as a class project. Loy Barton, inventor 
  115. of Class B, was a graduate and faculty member of the U of A. 
  116. Haven't found any relics from '34 - '49.  1949 we were granted 
  117. W5JNI and our station was in the then-Business Admin building. 
  118. We suspect the trustee knew nothing of the previous station as 
  119. he was not in engineering. We returned to W5YM in 1952 and the 
  120. club has  been going strong pretty much ever since.

  184. I worked on this last year. Essentially, we were formed
  185. in 1914 as one of the first stations on the west coast. 
  186. We started DX receiving experiments at this time, and 
  187. soon established skeds with the University of Washington 
  188. and a few other schools. Our first call was 6BB and dates
  189. back to at least 1920. I think oneof our members was the 
  190. first woman to get a commercial radiotelephone operators 
  191. license in 1924. Early on we were also connected withthe 
  192. commercial station here at Cal, and did early broadcasts 
  193. from football games, alumni dinners, etc. Club fell into 
  194. decline in the1930's, but was revived after the war, 
  195. and has followed typical boomand bust cycles since.

  376. The club has been around for many years. The original
  377. club was W0YI. It was founded over 75 years ago. The
  378. W0YI club call is still maintained here at ISU by one 
  379. of our faculty members.
  380.  
  381. Our club has approximately 20 members who are somewhat 
  382. active. There are many more hams here at ISU, but many 
  383. of them are too busy with their studies and other clubs
  384. to become involved with the CARC. We are always in 
  385. search of new membership.
  386.  
  387. Our members can usually be found on 2meters or 70cm.
  388. At this point in time, there is very little HF activity
  389. in the club.
  390. Our club has been involved at ISU for many years. We have
  391. meetings several times per month. Every spring, we set up
  392. an open house display and help with communications for the
  393. annual VEISHEA celebration, which is the largest student-run
  394. event of its kind in the United States. We provide 
  395. communications for the VEISHEA parade, calling tow trucks,
  396. ambulances, and the police if the need arises.
  397. It is best for new prospective members or people 
  398. interested in the club to call me or Clyde Walter at
  399. the numbers above. I am only at ISU during the Fall and
  400. Spring semesters, while Clyde is a professor who is here
  401. year around if the need arises to contact the club in the
  402. summer months.

  456. The MTSU club has been around since at least the 1960s, first as a 
  457. trusteeship of the Dept. of Industrial Studies, and now under the 
  458. Dept. of Computer Science. Membership has been small because the 
  459. historic mission of the University was that of a teacher's college 
  460. (thankfully that's changing). The Raider Amateur Radio Club is a 
  461. key player in the packet radio field, and its members provide part 
  462. of the core support in a project to bring high-speed (56k bps and 
  463. up) packet connectivity to the entire state of Tennessee, from 
  464. Mountain City to Memphis.

  503. HISTORY
  504.  The Northwestern Amateur Radio Society dates back until late
  505. 40s or early 50s. It has been affiliated with the McCormick
  506. school of Technology and the department of Electrical
  507. Engineering since its inception. The club has achieved many
  508. awards over the years, including one of the very early 5-band
  509. DXCC's.
  510.  
  511. In 1991 a storm took down our main tower and antenna, and the
  512. shack had fallen into disrepair. However, in 1992 Drs. Allen
  513. Taflove and Alan Sahakian took over the faculty advisor
  514. position, and launched an effort to bring the station back on
  515. the air. In the summer of 1992 a new tower was erected at a
  516. better rooftop spot than before at a cost of over $10,000, and
  517. faculty and student members together cleaned and renovated the
  518. shack, and the old transceiver equipment was replaced. We
  519. also pulled in Ethernet cabling for Internet, and got a
  520. computer (w9bgx.nuars.nwu.edu).

  522. We are currently looking into holding a course in the
  523. Department of Electrical Engineering which will use the
  524. resources of the Amateur Radio club, and hope it will increase
  525. student participation.

  705. W2SZ was originally created as 2SZ by the Troy YMCA around 1910. It 
  706. was turned over  to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1917 where 
  707. it has been providing services to its members and the community 
  708. ever since.

  710. The station provides Amateurs with an opportunity to keep in contact 
  711. with friends at home as well as providing for the learning of radio 
  712. and basic electronics. The station also provides a friendly and 
  713. relaxed atmosphere where members can come to get away from the 
  714. stress of classes and work.

  716. W2SZ, known to members are Zed, is a friendly group of people that 
  717. are willing to share their knowledge and help those who have an 
  718. interest in ham radio to get, or advance, their license. In addition 
  719. they are willing to share their knowledge in the proper maintenance 
  720. and operation of both club and personal equipment.

  722. The club currently consists of about 30 members and is located at 
  723. Six Sunset Terrace, Troy, NY. It also has contact with many of the 
  724. past members who have long since graduated from RPI, or community 
  725. members who live in the Troy area. It provides the members with 
  726. many contacts,  and also provides the community with a viable method 
  727. of communication through the repeaters that the club has. In 
  728. addition to day to day communications, W2SZ also offers lines of 
  729. communication during periods of crisis. Examples of the Club's 
  730. community involvement were during the San Francisco earthquake, 
  731. and during Operation Desert Storm.

  822. louis and adjacent Ill. areas. There is talk of getting active on 
  823. packet radio with a TCP/IP gateway to the internet. Also some 
  824. experimentation with 10GHz microwave.

  836. We have a club call W0QEV that has been ours at least since 1947 
  837. which is the oldest log that we can find. The league claims that 
  838. we have been affiliated with them since 1949 which makes us one 
  839. of the older if not oldest club station in the zero call region. 
  840. This far back though and nobody really knows. Someday we will have 
  841. to search though old call books from just after the war to see just 
  842. when that call appears.

  844. The club started as part of the department of electrical engineering 
  845. here. It became a student union organization around a decade ago and 
  846. as a result has a steady source of funds. As far as membership, if 
  847. only that was as steady as funding. The club has students, 
  848. graduate students, professors, university staff and even alumni. 
  849. Probably around 20 members but only half that many are easy to 
  850. get a hold of. There are always to few undergrads!
  851.  
  852. An addendum to the above. After the war st. louis became part of 
  853. the zero district as opposed to the old nine district. We have 
  854. reason to believe that the club was around even before the war, 
  855. but don't know under which call or how we can research this. 
  856. The ARRL doesn't know and the fcc doesn't even bother with this 
  857. type of stuff.
